Books of the year
Here we go, in no particular order...
1. Sabrina Fludde by Pauline Fisk. A magical journey of self-discovery, with minor moments of perfection.
2. Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. Words don't do this justice. Set to be a cult classic. Mysterious, moving and briliiant.
3. Milo's Wolves by Jenny Nimmo. Action packed with well-drawn characters.
4. True Believer by Virginia Euwer Wolff. Unbelievably clever and moving - dream-like prose coupled with funny/sad observations of teenhood.
5. The Kite Rider by Geraldine McCaughrean. A masterpiece of storytelling.

Book series of the Month: "Wicca" by Cate Tiernan

What's the plot? Morgan Rowlands is just like any other sixteen-year-old American girl - until she discovers Wicca. A mysterious boy named Cal Blaire introduces Morgan and her friends to witchcraft, which Morgan finds she has a natural talent for. Drama, love, frienship and magic abound in this fast-paced and passionately written series.

Author info: Cate Tiernan was born in New Orleans, LA, in 1961. Her first book was published in 1990, although it was a young, middle-grade chapter book, nothing like the Wicca series. She helped L.J.Smith edit her series 'The Secret Circle' when she lived in New York. Cate says that she is not strictly Wiccan because she finds it too organized a religion. However, she says "I can really relate to Wicca, and I so appreciate its woman-centeredness and its essentially female identity".
Among her influences are Barbara Pym and P.D.James.
Cate Tiernan lives in Durham, NC, and has two children.

More info: In America, the Wicca series is called "Sweep". There is also a super edition coming out, entitled "Night's Child".
